Between the mountains & the sea

Before borders.
Before memory.

Kerala did not begin with its name. Its rocks, rivers and changing shoreline hold histories far older than any kingdom or state.

Our ambition is to gather the full breadth of Kerala’s history and knowledge in one open-source place. The land within today’s borders is our frame: geology, ancient life, human traces, language, culture and the everyday stories that might otherwise be scattered or lost.

God’s own country, read a little deeper. A growing archive, built from evidence. Sources linked. Uncertainty preserved. Corrections welcomed. The wonder is in what we know, and in what there is still to find.

The land takes shape

The Western Ghats are part of a geological story that reaches back to the breakup of Gondwana. Their forests and mountain slopes still shape the path of the monsoon. The landscape is an archive, too.

Landscapes & life

Fossils, sediments and living ecosystems ask different questions of the same ground. This strand will gather evidence of past environments and the life they held, with dates and uncertainties kept in view.

Traces in the stone

At Edakkal in Wayanad, human and animal figures are engraved into rock. These marks offer glimpses of people before written chronicles, while their meanings and chronology invite careful interpretation.

A coast, connected

Pottery, brick structures and a wooden canoe found at Pattanam bring an early trading settlement into view. Its finds connect this coast with the Indian Ocean, Red Sea and Mediterranean. Its identification with Muziris remains a possibility, not a settled fact.

People & power

Rulers and households, work and learning, struggles for dignity and journeys overseas. The later chapters follow people as closely as borders, with records to support the story and room to question it.

Language, memory & AI

Kerala’s stories deserve richer representation in AI. We aim to collect more Malayalam texts and local knowledge in a Malayalam-first archive, with English alongside, so readers and AI systems can draw on deeper language and historical context. More sources, more perspectives, better questions.

03 / An open beginning

A shared home.
An open invitation.

Historians, Malayalam writers, translators, archivists and developers: help build this with us. Bring a source. Improve a translation. Question a claim. Preserve a text. You don’t need to write code to contribute.

The archive is Malayalam-first, with English alongside. Richer Malayalam texts and Kerala sources can help people and AI work with deeper local context. Future visualizations will grow from the open data. Coverage is incomplete; every careful contribution helps give Kerala’s knowledge a shared home.
